We Just Implemented Google's Nano Banana: What It Is & Why We Switched 🍌✨

We're excited to share that StoryBookly has switched from OpenAI's image generation model to Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, also known by its fun nickname "Nano Banana."

Why the switch? Mainly two reasons:

  1. It's a lot cheaper, which helps us keep costs under control.
  2. It promises better consistency, which is a big plus for storybooks where characters and scenes need to stay visually coherent.

Early Impressions: Style & User Reactions 🎨

So far, here's what we've noticed in real use:

  • Style differences:

    • OpenAI's images tended to look softer, more painterly.
    • Google's Nano Banana images feel harsher—more contrast, stronger lines and details.
  • User feedback:
In early tests, users actually preferred the Nano Banana results. Even though the style is bolder, test readers found them more striking and engaging. That's why we're now rolling it out to everyone on StoryBookly.

  • Consistency:
Our initial runs suggest that Nano Banana does a better job keeping characters looking the same across different images—a crucial factor for illustrated stories.

What We're Using Now vs. Later ⏳

Right now, we're only using Nano Banana for straight image generation.
We haven't yet turned on all the advanced editing and extra features it offers, such as:

  • Editing specific parts of an image
  • Fusing multiple input images into one
  • Style transfer and finer creative controls

These are on our roadmap—we plan to bring them in soon once we've tested stability and user experience at scale.

Coming Soon: User Choice Between Models 🔄

At the moment, all images on StoryBookly are powered by Google's Nano Banana.
But soon, we'll give you the option to choose between Google's model and OpenAI's model—so you can decide which style best fits your story.

Why This Matters for StoryBookly 📚

For our storytellers and readers, this change means:

  • Cheaper, more sustainable image generation → more freedom for us to offer rich visuals
  • Better character consistency → your favorite heroes and heroines stay recognizable from page to page
  • A new style direction → bolder, more contrast-heavy visuals that test users are already loving

What's Next 🔮

Our next steps with Nano Banana:

  • Implementing editing and fusion features so creators can refine visuals page by page
  • Rolling out the model choice option so you can switch between Google and OpenAI
  • Continuing to track feedback so we balance visual quality with storytelling flow
